The M.Sc. degree programme “Resource Efficiency in Architecture and Planning” aims to enable participants to promote sustainable urban development in different geographical and cultural settings.

This fall it is 10 years that we welcomed the first REAP generation at HCU–a reason to celebrate! To get together, renew old ties, form new ones. This is what we will do on Friday 22nd November 2019 at HCU. It will be a One-Day Event. We will present REAP to ourselves and the public and in the evening, we will party in town! To organize the event, we need your formal registration.

The upcoming edition of the HafenCity Lectures Relations takes place under the title "Particular Cases and Situated Practices". International architects and artists are invited to have a public conversation about one of their projects, with one project partner, be that a client, curator, or collaborator. The aim is to explore, from various perspectives, a specific project (a particular case) and the process of its development in relation to its urban, sociopolitical, historical, and cultural site. How is knowledge and a practice produced on site, situated in between diverse actors and agents, complex practical and conceptual Frameworks?

Aristide Antonas is a Greek architect, writer, visual artist. He develops innovative architectural projects with philosophical and utopian content. His principal topics of interest are “protocols as architecture”, “infrastructure of the domestic sphere”, “stability from the exaggeration of data flow”; texts combined with traditional design techniques use often references to legislation and archaeology. Antonas had solo shows at the Swiss Architecture Museum, the Vorarlberger Architektur Institut and the FRAC Centre in Orleans. He holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Paris X.

Hila Peleg, born in Tel Aviv, Israel, is a curator and filmmaker based in Berlin. She has conceived exhibitions and interdisciplinary cultural events, across the visual arts, film and architecture. Peleg is the founder and artistic director of the biannual program Berlin Documentary Forum at Haus der Kulturen der Welt and was a curator of documenta 14. Peleg’s feature films “Crime Against Art” and “Sign Space” are observation-based documentaries that engage with the conventions and debates informing the institutional space of art.

Cities are routinely eulogized as harbingers of progress and emancipation, as the locus of innovation and creativity. And, in fact, the historical record of cities in engendering artistic, scientific or societal creativity from the ancient Greece polis over Renaissance Florence, Modern Art Paris to New York’s ‘Warhol Economy’ is impressive. More recently, though, discords began to mingle with the harmonious
choir praising the allegedly greatest invention of humanity. The fixation with the unique affordances of urban places, as the critique maintains, has systematically impoverished our understanding of creativity in the periphery. To rectify this urban bias, a veritable stream of research initiatives has been launched more recently to push the focus of scholarly debate on creativity from center to periphery, from the
urban to the rural. While this challenge of the ontological privilege of the center appears overdue, Edge is not intended to simply shift the view-finder of academic inquiry from one static territorial category to another. Edge rather pursues three more ambitious aims.

First, Edge seeks to push beyond the prevailing perception of periphery as the non- and the beyondcenter. The term periphery routinely amounts to hardly more than a residual category for deficient places suffering from a fundamental lack of those quintessential urban qualities that fuel innovation: Jacobsexternalities, Florida-amenities, and Glaeser-density. The first aim of Edge is to critically interrogate this narrow perception, and to move from a deficiency-fixated to an asset-based conceptualization of peripherality. Second, Edge aims at challenging the prevailing understanding of centrality and peripherality as adamant fate sealed by geography and history. Actors might deliberately choose a peripheral position as outsider to shield their creativity from the conformist pressures of the mainstream. Moreover, creative outsiders who transit between center and periphery might catalyze shifts in evaluative frames, and what previously used to be disdained as periphery morphs into a center of a new creative movement. Third, Edge probes into the interrelations between generation and valuation of novelty, and elucidates the dynamic interdependencies between center and periphery: Although peripherality might benefit the inception of novelty, centrality is essential for the valuation and authentication of the value of the novelty.

Interdisziplinäre Ringvorlesung: Ein Quadratkilometer Weltkultur. Geschichten und Perspektiven auf Jerusalem.

Für unzählige Menschen ist die Stadt Jerusalem von unvergleichlicher Bedeutung, vorderhand für die drei monotheistischen Weltreligionen – Judentum, Christentum und Islam.Von der Machtübernahme durch den biblischen König David über die Eroberung durch die Römer und die Kreuzzüge im Mittelalter bis hin zu den aktuellen Konflikten verkörpert die Stadt eine einzigartige Geschichte.
Trotz alledem oder gerade deshalb wirkt die Stadt für die Hälfte der Weltbevölkerung als geistig-spiritueller Magnet, hier wird Geschichte geatmet. Jerusalem steht in seiner Einzigartigkeit für das kommende Semester als Ausgangspunkt für unterschiedlichste Perspektiven. Mit direktem Bezug zur Stadt oder als Ausgangspunkt um über Kultur- und Kunstgeschichtliche Perspektiven nachzugehen. Die Blickrichtungen von Musik, Archäologie und Kulturgeschichte legen Schichten eines Ortes frei, der weit über Jerusalem hinausgeht und deren Bedeutung sich bis in den Alltag hinein, in vielen Teilen der Welt wiederfindet.

Die digitale, technische Welt, in der wir leben, ist voller Herausforderungen, Chancen und Risiken für uns alle. Für viele ist sie aber auch eine Welt vieler Mysterien: intelligente Maschinen, Biotechnologie, das Internet der Dinge, Globalisierung, Roboter, Drohnen, Social Media und soziale Kreditsysteme: Was bedeutet das alles? Und vor allem, wie gehen wir damit um?

Diese und ähnliche Fragen stellen wir in der Veranstaltungsreihe „Zukunft | Gesellschaft | Technologie“ mit Hilfe populärer Filme und daran anschließenden Diskussionsrunden mit Expert*innen vom Fach. Wir verstehen technologische Entwicklungen dabei als gesellschaftliche Herausforderungen, die sozialverträglicher, ökonomisch-machbarer, ökologisch-erhaltender Positionierung bedürfen. Diese zu finden ist ein gesamtgesellschaftliches Projekt, das von jeder und jedem Einzelnen fordert, Zukunft zu denken und eine kritisch-reflektierende Haltung zu entwickeln. Die Veranstaltungsreihe will sich diesen Herausforderungen der Zukunft stellen und einen Dialog über unseren Umgang mit Technologie anstoßen.

im Rahmen der Ringvorlesung "Künstliche Intelligenz"

 

Künstliche Intelligenz evoziert sowohl optimistisch-utopische als auch apokalyptisch-dystopische Blicke in die Zukunft und wirft grundlegende Fragen nach deren Gestaltung auf: Wie können wir mit (oder gegen) KI eine zukünftige Gesellschaft entwerfen? Welche Potentiale, aber auch Risiken bergen immer schneller lernende Computer und Maschinen? Und wie können Chancen und Gefahren politisch, ökonomisch, aber auch moralisch verhandelt werden? Auch wenn vieles vorerst eine Zukunftsvision bleibt, spiegeln die Vorstellungen, Prioritäten, Ängste aber auch Hoffnungen in Bezug auf KI gesellschaftliche Wertvorstellungen, Ideale und Spannungsverhältnisse wider. Die Zukunft wird wesentlich davon geprägt sein, inwieweit KI menschliches Handeln ersetzen kann und damit auch, wie sich eine Gesellschaft im Wechselspiel mit Technologien reorganisieren muss. Die Ringvorlesung beschäftigt sich mit aktuellen KI-Entwicklungen und ihren sozialen Bedeutungen.

Arbeit ist eine existenzielle Tätigkeit unseres Lebens, die nicht nur der ökonomischen Reproduktion dient, sondern auch sinnstiftend sein kann. Im Zeitalter von Digitalisierung und Globalisierung unterliegt Arbeit einem steten Wandel und wird derzeit nicht nur mit Automatisierung, sondern auch mit Prekarisierung und Flexibilisierung verbunden. Die Angst vor der Überflüssigwerdung menschlicher Arbeitskraft in Anbetracht smarter Maschinen und Roboter, der potentielle oder tatsächliche Verlust von Arbeit oder das Streben nach einer Optimierung der Work-Life Balance verweisen auf gesellschaftliche Problemlagen, die allesamt um das Thema Arbeit kreisen. Diese verweisen auf die zentralen Bedeutungen und Funktionen von Arbeit für eine Gesellschaft.

Die interdisziplinäre Ringvorlesung wird derartige Fragen nach den gesellschaftlichen und individuellen Implikationen von Arbeit im 21. Jahrhundert aufgreifen.
