Freeform Grid-Shell Design

1) Motivation

The new software tools for visualization and numerical analysis of structural systems can be implemented in the design process of freeform grid-shells. However, there are still no full comprehensive design tools available. On the other side it is required to consider all known boundary criteria: aesthetical, mechanical as well as production and erection related boundary criteria.

2) Optimization process

For the optimization of grid-shells, a combination of various available software tools can be used. The data transfer between these tools must be controlled and in best case it should be automatized to enable iterative optimization.

3) Optimization goals

 Architectural goals:

·   Closeness: Close distance of the optimized free-form-grid-shell to the initial free-form surfacel
    free-form surface

·   Fairness: Constant curvature or angles between successive beams

Stuctural design goals:

·   Minimize the beam connection forces

·   Minimize the cross sections of the nodes and beams

·   Favorable glass geometries
