Smart Building Systems through Recombination of Materials and Wireless Technologies (SBMuW)

Smart Building Systems - SBMuW

The joint project "Smart Building Systems through Recombination of Materials and Wireless Technologies" (SBMuW) at HafenCity University Hamburg is funded by the Federal Ministry of Transportation (BMV) as part of the "Deutsches Zentrum für Mobilität der Zukunft" (DZM). It is part of the structure of the "Hanseatic Wireless Competence Center" (HAWICC) together with other projects.

Aim of the project

The research aims to develop a new approach to measuring the condition of concrete and asphalt pavements in roads and bridges. The integration of sensor technology, wireless communication and machine learning should enable precise and predictive statements to be made about the condition and state of infrastructure structures.

Traditional measurement methods already provide sensory data, but do not take into account the wide range of possible measurement options, such as usage patterns, seasonal effects or usage imbalances. SBMuW aims to close these gaps and enable more comprehensive data collection to plan early maintenance and repair of our built (transport) infrastructure. This can be more cost-effective and sustainable than complete refurbishments or new builds.

Who is involved?

The project is a collaboration between professorships at the HCU and the practice partner BREUER Nachrichtentechnik GmbH. It is the first DZM-funded sub-project in the HAWICC that works transdisciplinarily to research and experimentally implement energy-efficient, low-maintenance and sustainable combinations of sensor technology and concrete.
