The "Hanseatic (formerly Hamburg) Wireless Innovation Competence Center" (HAWICC) at HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU) conducts inter- and transdisciplinary projects ranging from basic research to application-oriented research and development.
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Jörg Müller-Lietzkow, scientists from HCU and Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) as well as other renowned institutions have been conducting interdisciplinary research together for several years. The focus is on infrastructure and wireless innovations. Previous projects such as “Level 5 Indoor Navigation” (L5 IN) and “Fahrplanoptimierung Plus” (FPOplus) integrate the latest network technologies, in particular 5G and sensor technology, in combination with AI and the latest data analysis methods.
The HAWICC is involved in two interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research projects in line with the HCU’s key topics. This involves the digitalisation of the built mobility infrastructure, taking sustainability aspects into account. The focus is on the use of wireless technologies and artificial intelligence. Social, economic and technical-ethical issues are also taken into account.

Smart Building Systems - SBMuW
The first DZM-funded sub-project in the HAWICC is entitled "Smarte Bausysteme durch Rekombination von Materialien und Wireless Technologien" (SBMuW). For the use case of bridges and roads as part of the built environment, extensive investigations are being carried out on concrete in the HCU construction laboratory with regard to its suitability as an information carrier. With the help of a practical partner from industry (BREUER Nachrichtentechnik), these results are used to further develop sensors and efficiently process the results generated. The aim is to realize a real laboratory in which the interaction of concrete, sensor technology and software is tested using artificial intelligence. The aim is to contribute to the early repair of bridges using a non-destructive and wireless approach.
Next Gen - NGCN
The “Next Generation City Networking" (NGCN) DZM-project aims to make a contribution to the infrastructure side of mobility by incorporating innovative wireless technologies and AI. A digital twin of an urban district is to be developed for the special application of route optimization for emergency vehicles as well as for overarching objectives in the planning of the city of short and fast routes, which combines static and dynamic data on the traffic situation in an urban real-time image. NGCN is the second DZM-sub-project in the HAWICC, in which nine professorships/departments at HCU and Technischen Universität Hamburg (TUHH) are working together on an interdisciplinary basis. Practical partners from industry and society are also involved: Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz (DFKI), BREUER Nachrichtentechnik GmbH, Björn Steiger Stiftung.
The Deutsche Zentrum für Mobilität der Zukunft (DZM) is a funding project of the Bundesministeriums für Verkehr (BMV). The DZM brings together expertise from science, business, society and public administration. Four research and innovation locations form the DZM network and contribute to mobility research:
„Das Bundesministerium für Digitales und Verkehr (BMDV) betrachtet das Themenfeld Mobilität auch im DZM verkehrsträgerübergreifend und unter nachhaltigen Gesichtspunkten. Dem tragen auch die vier Projektstandorte Rechnung, an denen unter dem Dach des DZM Forschungs- und Entwicklungsleistungen erbracht werden:
- In Hamburg werden smarte Lösungen für Sensortechnologien in Kombination mit Künstlicher Intelligenz für den Einsatz in der Straßen- und Brückenmobilität entwickelt und erprobt. Die Projekte werden umgesetzt unter Federführung des Hamburg (Anm. d. Redaktion: Hanseatic) Wireless Innovation Competence Center (HAWICC).
- In Karlsruhe werden nutzerzentrierte ÖPNV-Angebote als attraktive Alternativen zum eigenen Pkw für das Pendeln zwischen Land und Stadt erforscht. Die Federführung der Forschungsprojekte obliegt dem Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT).
- Der Forschungsstandort Minden widmet sich zukünftigen Mobilitätssystemen, die sich durch zunehmend automatisierte und digitalisierte Verkehre auszeichnen; in diesem Zusammenhang wird eine Forschungsinfrastruktur für alternative schienengebundene Fahrzeuge aufgebaut. Das DZM ist in Minden angegliedert an den RailCampus OWL.
- In Annaberg-Buchholz werden zukünftige Kommunikationstechnologien für den Einsatz im Schienenverkehr erforscht und eine neue Forschungsinfrastruktur für Bahntechnologien der Zukunft aufgebaut. Die Forschungsprojekte des DZM sind am Smart Rail Connectivity Campus(SRCC) in Annaberg-Buchholz angesiedelt.“ - BMV
