June, 27: Tooltip: B!SON – Recommendation service for Open Access Journals

If you are looking for a suitable Open Access journal for your next publication, the B!SON tool (developed by the TIB and the SLUB Dresden) can help you. The special thing about it is that you only need to enter the (working) title, the abstract and/or the reference list of your planned paper to receive a list of journal recommendations. The tool can be used free of charge, and no registration is required.

If you use the link provided here, you will be taken to a B!SON version specially tailored to the Open Access options at the HafenCity University. Three different tags draw attention to the options at HCU for financing Open Access fees. In addition, B!SON provides further details about the journals, such as the respective publisher, the languages, the type of peer review and the average time to publication. Many of these details can also be filtered.

The data basis of the B!SON recommendation service is the Directory of Open Access Journals – an index of pure Open Access journals that meet the defined Open Access quality criteria. In addition to B!SON the OA.finder can be used to search for a suitable journal, which also includes information on publications in hybrid journals and on book publishers. The following applies to all of these journal recommendation and search tools: The information is intended as a guide, but should be checked again using the journal websites or the information available in HCU intern (library section). Would you like to tell us about your experiences with the tools, or do you have any further questions? Please feel free to contact us: digitaledienste(at)hcu-hamburg.de

May 14th: Workshop für Forschende "Good Research Practice for Publications: Avoiding common mistakes"

As a researcher, you work with scientific literature on a daily basis: As a reader, you stay informed about new findings and relate them to your own research project; as an author, you write and submit your own publications. In this workshop on May 22nd from 11-12 a.m., we will shift between these two perspectives. We will begin by examining scientific publications from the reader’s point of view: What do you look for when assessing the quality and integrity of a publication? Have you ever come across something questionable while reading or searching for literature? How can such impressions be verified? Then we will take the author’s perspective and explore solutions together: What can we do better, and how can we avoid common mistakes in publishing?

This workshop will be held in English and is especially aimed at early career researchers. You can find the details to join the Zoom meeting in HCU intern/Bibliothek on the right-hand side. No registration is required.

April 10th: oa.finder for searching publication options

The oa.finder is a tool developed to support researchers in their search for suitable scholarly publication options. Currently, it contains around 57,000 journals that can be searched using keywords, publisher, or a specific journal title/ISSN. What makes the oa.finder special is that the filter options and detailed information about the individual journals are specifically tailored to finding a suitable journal for an (Open Access-) publication. Feel free to use the oa.finder search field on our website or enter the HCU under “My organization” to receive concrete information about possible cost coverage for an Open Access publication in a journal.

In addition to searching for suitable journals, the oa.finder can now also be used for planned book publications. To do so, the publication type must be changed to “Book”. As a result, information about around 70 scientific publishing houses is displayed, which can be further filtered by using various criteria such as subjects, book processing charges or options for print editions.

March 18th: Explanatory video by open-access.network on publishing a cumulative dissertation

A cumulative dissertation consists of a comprehensive text along with scientific articles that have already been published or accepted for publication. For publishing such a cumulative dissertation you can use the HCU repository repOS. If you publish your articles in Open Access under a CC BY license you can easily include them in your dissertation and republish them. Therefore, we recommend choosing Open Access whenever possible.

If this is not an option, many publishers also allow to include closed-access-articles in a cumulative dissertation – even if exclusive usage rights have typically been transferred to the publisher. However, in such cases, an individual rights check is always necessary.

These aspects are now clearly explained in a video by open-access.network.
