The format is basically a “first week” during which you will receive important introductory events and input to make your start at HCU easier. Of course, you should also have the opportunity to get to know the university, the city and, above all, each other.
During the OE week, there are various offers in the respective study programs. The program takes place on site at HafenCity University. In addition to the official introductory events, which you should not miss, your student representatives will also organize a series of events. Greeting from the President of HafenCity University - Prof. Dr. Jörg Müller-Lietzkow
German original translated:
Dear students,
First of all, I would like to welcome you to HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU). I am very pleased that you have chosen our HafenCity University right on the Norderelbe and I hope that you will be able to say after you have successfully graduated: This was a good decision in my life.
The start of your Bachelor's degree program marks the beginning of a new phase in your life, which often follows school and/or training. This is certainly characterized by curiosity about your preferred subject area and many new people, the expectations of the course of study, a little awe of the challenges ahead, but above all the great freedom to devote yourself to exactly what you have decided to do: to enter the academic process with pleasure and joy. Perhaps for some of you there will also be the move to one of Germany's largest metropolises - some of you are talking about the most beautiful German city - the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
I would also like to extend a warm welcome to those of you who are new to our Master's programs. Even if you are already “old hands” at studying, this is the beginning of a deepening of the knowledge you have already acquired, a change of perspective if you are changing your place of study and certainly a challenging preparation for your future career - be it in business, government or academia.
And I would also like to wish the students returning from the semester break a good start to the new semester. I hope that you will continue to work at our HCU with as much enthusiasm and joy as you have shown in the past summer semester. I would particularly like to emphasize and praise your outstanding initiative for the Headland Festival in the summer. I was very impressed and delighted by the cohesion, energy and results you achieved.
At the HCU, it is important to us to provide scientifically sound answers to the questions of our time, which our expertise can offer in the context of architecture and metropolitan development. In addition to the omnipresent and pressing issue of climate change, we are dedicated to meta-topics such as the changes brought about by digitalization as well as the highly relevant and increasing issue of social justice. The HCU stands for open-minded, tolerant and diverse coexistence and we reject all forms of racism, anti-Semitism and discrimination. At this point, we stand together to protect our liberal, peaceful and democratic values. Both in the analog and digital space.
Even today, studying is about more than just preparing for a career. We are all called upon to make a contribution to sustainability in times of climate change. We face up to this challenge on the basis of research findings and want to work with you to provide clear and well-founded answers and propose solutions. Only if the theoretical knowledge is later put into practice by you, only if many people get involved on the basis of the best possible knowledge, can we succeed united in making a contribution at this point. I would like to extend a warm invitation to you all and hope that you will see that a degree course offers much more than just preparation for the job market.
I wish you all a good start to the new semester, whether you are new students starting your Bachelor's or Master's degree course or fellow students returning from the semester break. I very much hope that you feel at home at our university so that you can learn, research and work together on these and other topics.
Yours sincerely,
Jörg Müller-Lietzkow
