Study and design projects
The urban planning program is distinguished by the fact that, in addition to traditional teaching methods, it incorporates teaching methods tailored to the practical demands of urban planning: student projects, design assignments, and field trips. The study projects form the core component of the program. Study projects are problem-based, practice-oriented urban planning assignments that integrate the various aspects of the program with the goal of analysis and concept development. Working in the project group provides up to five students with essential skills for urban planning through exemplary, interdisciplinary learning tailored to their future professional field. These skills include, in particular:
- the interdisciplinary understanding, analysis, and planning of urban development
- the ability to conduct sound analyses of situations and problems and to identify emerging issues
- the development of work methods and solutions appropriate to the subject matter (work plans, flowcharts)
- working in accordance with subject-specific guidelines and according to plan
- developing alternative concepts and evaluating them
- presenting and advocating planning proposals to the public
- the involvement of stakeholders
- the ability to engage in interdisciplinary teamwork and international cooperation
The project handbook for the Urban Planning program at HCU contains suggestions for project work.
The urban and/or landscape design project focuses on the conversion or redesign of an urban sub-area. By engaging with the specific site of the project and its socioeconomic, cultural, and morphological context, students deepen their methodological, conceptual, and design skills. This involves integrating specific architectural and planning methods, as well as approaches and tools, into the developed transformation strategy and the specific project.
The M2 project is the final project of the master’s program and aims to apply, deepen, and test the knowledge gained during the bachelor’s and master’s programs by focusing on a specific topic. The M2 project groups, consisting of three to five students, organize themselves and independently develop a research topic in consultation with their advisors. The necessary information can be found under Dates and Registration. For further general and organizational information about the M2 study project, please refer to the project handbook.
Masterthesis
The master's thesis is the final project for the Master's program in Urban Planning. In this thesis, students are expected to demonstrate their ability to independently address a problem within the context of urban planning using academic methods within a specified timeframe.
