Structure | Course Content

The structure of the program is governed by HCU’s examination and academic regulations, which can be found on the Examination Office’s website. Detailed information on course content can be found in the module descriptions; the current module descriptions are available on ahoi.

The module plan shows the structure of the modules to be completed over six semesters.

Module plan BSPO 2023 (Module plan BSPO 2015)

The module handbooks provide a detailed description of each module, including the type and scope of the courses, learning objectives, course content, and assessment methods.

The Academic and Examination Regulations ASPO (General Study and Examination Regulations) and BSPO (Specific Study and Examination Regulations) govern the entire course of your studies.

The equivalency list shows the current adjustments to the BSPO 2015. These are intended to facilitate studies and update teaching and learning methods.

Course Projects and Design Courses

The urban planning program is distinguished by the fact that, in addition to the traditional teaching methods of a university program—such as lectures, seminars, and tutorials—it incorporates three teaching methods tailored to the practical demands of urban planning: student projects, design assignments, and field trips. Student projects form the central component of the program.

Course projects are problem-based, practice-oriented urban planning assignments that integrate the various components of the curriculum with the aim of conducting analysis and developing concepts. Through experiential, interdisciplinary learning tailored to their future professional field, working in project groups equips students with essential skills for urban planning practice.

These skills include, in particular:

  • the interdisciplinary perception, analysis, and design of urban development
  • the ability to conduct sound analyses of situations and problems and to identify emerging issues
  • the development of work approaches and solutions appropriate to the subject matter (work plans, flowcharts)
  • Working according to subject-specific guidelines and according to plan
  • the development of alternative concepts and their evaluation
  • the presentation and advocacy of planning proposals to the public
  • the involvement of stakeholders
  • the ability to engage in interdisciplinary teamwork and international cooperation

The project handbook for the Urban Planning program at HCU contains suggestions for project work.

Internship

The internship is designed to give students the opportunity to apply and expand upon the knowledge and methods they have acquired so far in a professional setting. This will ideally help them identify their areas of interest, assess their career goals, and, if necessary, select appropriate specialized courses within their degree program. Students are responsible for finding their own internship placement.

Please note that the "Internship" module is available under both BSPO 15 and BSPO 23. Different regulations apply.

If you began your studies before the 2023/24 winter semester, the provisions of BSPO 15 still apply to you. You can find all the information about the "Internship" module in the module handbook that applies to you.

Bachelor's thesis

The bachelor’s thesis is the final project for the Bachelor’s program in Urban Planning. In this thesis, students are expected to demonstrate their ability to independently address a problem within the context of urban planning using scientific methods within a specified timeframe. For further information, please refer to the module handbook.

You can find all the important information regarding formalities and deadlines on the Examination Office's website.
