In addition to the overall grade, HafenCity Universität (HCU) degree certificates also state a grade according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), provided the corresponding reference group comprises at least 40 people.

The individual overall grade of a graduate is rated in comparison to other graduates in the same study programme. Degree holders in the same HCU study programme of the previous two years represent the reference group. The class of a year comprises graduates since 1^st April in a calendar year until 31^st March of the following year.
