Information on the corona virus (SARS-CoV-2) and current information on studying and teaching at the HCU

Update from 31.03.2021

Studies and teaching at HafenCity University Hamburg will take place exclusively digitally. The HCU buildings will continue to be closed to students, among others. Exam formats also had to be adapted. Due the increasing number of infections, all present-day exams have been canceled.

Academic staff, as well as all technical and administrative staff, are in their home offices continuously or at least temporarily. The buildings will remain closed to students.

The Corona-related measures at HCU are based on the applicable legal framework and the general spatial conditions. As the infection situation is very dynamic, we always have to adapt planning and decisions to the current situation and, if necessary, also at short notice. We hope for your understanding.

The basis for any classroom teaching at the HCU is the observance and obligatory compliance with the general regulations of infection protection and the framework protection concept (Document in German) developed and updated by the responsible authorities in coordination with the Institute for Hygiene and Environment and the Office for Occupational Safety and Health.

This includes in particular the adherence to a maximum number of participants on the premises of the HCU as well as the documentation of the participants for tracing possible chains of infection. It is crucial for all of us that these requirements are adhered to and that a consistent tracing of chains of infection can be carried out.

In addition to the generally applicable framework concept, the library, the campus shop, the cafeteria, as well as laboratories and workshops also have their own local protection and hygiene concepts.

The HCU buildings remain closed due to high infection level. On-site appointments will not take place.

In principle, the following applies if the buildings are reopened:

In the university building, during courses and all other meetings on HCU premises, the obligation to wear a mouth and nose protector applies. If on-site lecture is possible, lecturers may may remove their mask while lecturing.

Apart from this, a strict mask obligation applies throughout the building. Please wear the mask over mouth AND nose. Please strictly observe the obligation to wear masks! Protecting each other must be a top priority for all of us.

A mobile security guard is present in the public areas. On the one hand, he or she is the contact person for questions of orientation, but on the other hand, he or she will make sure that the rules of distance and the obligation to wear a mask are consistently observed. In the event of non-compliance, persons may be expelled from the building.

Currently, courses are held exclusively in digital form.

The canteen and the café are closed until further notice.

The library is closed until 28 February 2021 inclusively, on-site visits are not possible. Of course, you can still use the library's extensive online services.

In compliance with the specified conditions you can drop off or pick up books from the porter. Please consult the library's FAQ for HCU students and employees for further information.

The library staff will be happy to answer any questions you may have by email or at a Zoom meeting.

The Campus Shop is closed to 28 February 2021 inclusively.

The Infothek and Student Administration can be reached as usual by phone or email:

Reachability of the Infothek

Reachability of the students administration

Since all HCU employees are either continuously or partially in their home offices, please send time-critical documents for the Infothek, the Student Administration and the Examination Office digitally to the respective e-mail address, if possible.

Unfortunately, due to the current situation, the student workplaces on the 1st floor and in the Campus Tower cannot be allocated as planned. The student workstations in the library can also not be reserved until further notice.

Due to the current development of the pandemic, the examinations should be conducted digitally as far as possible.

A few face-to-face exams were held at HCU from 3/15 to 3/27 in compliance with applicable Corona requirements (with a maximum of 50 people per room).

Please refer to the hygiene concept for examinations at the HCU Hamburg. For the protection of all examination participants, it is absolutely essential that our hygiene concept is strictly adhered to.

Before the examination, the students must sign and hand in a declaration that they are not suspected of being infected with the corona virus (Self declaration form).

Thesis presentations cannot take place in attendance in the winter semester 2020/21. If you have any questions, please contact the supervisor of your thesis directly.

Workshops and laboratories will remain closed until further notice. No appointments can be made.

Unfortunately, conferences and workshops cannot take place on the premises of the HCU until further notice.

The Corona Warning App informs users if they have been in the vicinity of a person who was later found to be infected with the corona virus. This enables a quick reaction and counteracts the risk of spreading the virus unconsciously.

In addition to the tried and tested rules of distance and hygiene and the use of everyday masks, the app is another important component in the fight against the corona pandemic. For the app to fulfil its purpose, it is important that as many people as possible use it. If your smartphone is technically equipped for this, we would like to urge you to install the app.

If the warning app shows "red", the very first thing you should do is go into quarantine immediately.

If you are planning to travel abroad privately, please remember that due to the very dynamic situation, entry into the country may involve further quarantine measures.

If you return from trips to (possibly newly declared) risk areas and are subject to the quarantine rules ordered by the authorities, you are not allowed to enter the HCU buildings after your return.

In order to care for and protect eachother, we kindly ask you to make your travel plans very carefully and to reconsider them if necessary.
