Publishing a doctoral thesis

According to doctoral regulations and the implementation guideline, the publication of a dissertation is part of the doctorate degree.
After passing the oral exam, the dissertation must be available to the scientific public within one year. This can be done in various ways:

> Electronic publication

> Publication with a publisher

> Publication as book on demand

> Publication in a journal

> Publication of a cumulative dissertation

Electronic publication

Electronic publication is the form of publication recommended by the HafenCity University. You can publish your dissertation on the library's publication server repOS.
By making publications available free of charge, the HafenCity University supports the idea of Open Access, which provides free access to scientific information.

What are the advantages of electronic publishing?

> Uncomplicated and free publication of your dissertation
> Rapid dissemination of your work and simplified access
> Indexing of your work through library catalogues, search engines and databases
> Publication with a permanently citable internet address (URN)

What do I have to do?

> Obtain confirmation of compliance of the evaluated dissertation with the ready-for-publication version on the print approval routing slip (available from the Doctoral Examination Board Office) and submit it to the office of the doctoral committee office. Email a copy of it to the library.

> Download the contract for the publication of a digital dissertation. Please read the publication contract carefully and send it signed by e-mail to the library. You will receive a signed copy back from us also by e-mail.

> Upload your dissertation with the corresponding metadata to the repOS publication server.

> The library checks the metadata for correctness and activates the document on the server after receiving the contract for the publication of a digital dissertation.

> The library issues a publication certificate and sends it to the doctoral committee. The publication certificate is the basis for issuing the doctoral certificate.

Publication with a publisher

If you publish your dissertation with a publisher, the library will receive one copy of the dissertation in book form, with the publication identified as a dissertation on the back of the title page, indicating the location of the dissertation.

What do I have to do?

> Submit a publisher's copy to the library together with the routing slip for print approval (available from the Doctoral Examination Board Office).

Publication as a book on demand

In the case of publication as Book on Demand (BoD), the publisher must guarantee a two-year availability of the publication. In addition, an electronic version of the dissertation must be submitted to the library.

What do I have to do?

> Have the publisher contractually guarantee you the right to store an electronic version of your thesis on the publication server of the HafenCity University Library.

> Download the contract for the publication of a digital publication. Please read the publication contract carefully and send two copies to the library. We will return one signed copy to you.

> Upload your dissertation with the corresponding metadata to the repOS publication server.

> The library checks the metadata for correctness and activates the document on the server after receipt of the contract for the publication of a digital publication.

> The library issues a publication certificate and sends it to the doctoral committee. The publication certificate is the basis for issuing the doctoral certificate.

Publication in a journal

If the dissertation is published in a journal, a copy of the dissertation in printed form must be submitted to the library. Likewise, proof must be submitted to the doctoral committee that the dissertation or its essential parts have been published in a journal.

What do I have to do?

> Submit a copy of your dissertation in book form to the library together with the routing slip for print approval (available from the Doctoral Examination Board Office) .

Publication of a cumulative dissertation

The cumulative doctorate is a procedure in which a series of articles published in relevant scientific journals or accepted for publication are submitted as a written doctoral thesis instead of a dissertation. The exact minimum number of publications required, as well as other criteria for a cumulative dissertation to meet regulations, are governed by the HCU doctoral regulations and  the implementation guideline. The electronic version of the cumulative dissertation deposited in the library should include the required overarching essay with summary, conclusions, and further research questions.
