Publishing a doctoral thesis

According to the doctoral regulations and the implementation guideline, publishing a dissertation is part of the doctoral degree.
After passing the oral exam, you must make the dissertation available to the scientific public within one year. This can be done in various ways:

>Electronic publication

>Publication with a publisher

>Publication as book on demand

>Publication in a journal

>Publication of a cumulative dissertation

>Overview of previously published dissertations

Electronic publication

Electronic publication is the form of publication recommended by the university. By making publications available free of charge, HafenCity University supports the Open Access idea, which provides free access to scientific information. You can publish your dissertation on the library's publication server.

What are the advantages of electronic publishing?

> Uncomplicated and free publication of your dissertation
> Rapid dissemination of your work and simplified access
> Indexing of your work through library catalogues, search engines and databases
> Publication with a permanently citable internet address (URN)

What do I have to do?

> Have the agreement of the assessed dissertation with the version ready for publication confirmed on the routing slip for print approval (available from the office of the doctoral committee) and submit it to the office of the doctoral committee.

> Download the contract for the publication of a digital publication. Please read the publication contract carefully and send two copies to the library. We will return one signed copy to you.

> Prepare your PDF file for publication. Use PDF/A format for this purpose. The file should not be larger than 120 MB.

> Register on the publication server.

> Transfer the document and its metadata by filling out the upload form.

> The library checks the metadata for correctness and activates the document on the server after receipt of the digital publication contract.

> The library issues a publication certificate and sends it to the doctoral committee. The publication certificate is the basis for issuing the doctoral certificate.

Publication with a publisher

In the case of publication by a publisher, the library receives a copy of the dissertation in book form, whereby the publication must be identified as a dissertation on the reverse side of the title page, stating the location of the dissertation.

What do I have to do?

> Submit a publisher's copy to the library together with the routing slip for print approval (available from the office of the doctoral committee).

Publication as book on demand

In the case of publication as Book on Demand (BoD), the publisher must guarantee a two-year availability of the publication. In addition, an electronic version of the dissertation must be submitted to the library.

What do I have to do?

> Have the publisher contractually guarantee you the right to store an electronic version of your thesis on the publication server of the HafenCity University Library.

Publication in a journal

If the dissertation is published in a journal, a copy of the dissertation in book form must be submitted to the library. Likewise, proof must be submitted to the doctoral committee that the dissertation or its essential parts have been published in a journal.

What do I have do to?

> Submit a copy of your dissertation in book form to the library together with the routing slip for print approval (available from the office of the doctoral committee) .

Publication of a cumulative dissertation

In the case of a cumulative dissertation, the required publication has already taken place through the publication of the four publications in accordance with the doctoral regulations. The version of the cumulative dissertation deposited in the library should include the required overarching essay with summary, conclusions and further research questions.

What do I have to do?

> Submit a copy of your dissertation in book form to the library along with the routing slip for print approval (available from the office of the doctoral committee).
