FAQ about the current use of the library

These FAQs address to students and HCU staff. You can find the regulations for external users here.

Last update: June 28, 2021

Is the library open again?

As of July 1st, the library is open from Monday to Friday from 10 am to 4 pm for HCU staff and students with limited services:

Everything about lending and returning items, using the multifunctional device and the (new!) scanner, or browsing on the shelf is possible. Books can be borrowed and returned at the selfcheck system. For this purpose, the selfcheck system has been extended to include the return function. You can collect requested media or pay fees at the service counter without contact. HCU students can use the workstations in the library under certain conditions.

Can I use the workstations in the library?

Due to the Hamburg SARS-CoV-2 containment regulation we can only provide you with a reduced number of workstations. Under the given conditions, 5 individual workstations are therefore available to you in the gallery during the library's opening hours from 10 am to 4 pm. Use is only possible after reserving a time slot and for HCU students only.

Procedure:

- To book a workstation log into moodle and select one of the possible workstations in the desired week.
- By calling up the respective workstation you will get an overview of the available time slots. Choose the one that suits you and book it.
- Come to the library at the booked time slot and show your negative corona test (48h PCR or 12h rapid antigen test) or proof of vaccination (CovPass/Corona-Warn-App). Afterwards you can take your booked single workstation independently (tables are numbered).
- Please be aware of the current protection and hygiene measures of the library and the HCU.

Which online media will I be able to access?

You can access the freely accessible information (Open Access) and  the licensed e-media (ebooks, ejournals, databases).

In order to provide the best possible support for teaching and learning in the digital term we are currently increasing our emedia holdings (collections).

Hint:
If you only want to search for emedia in the literature search engine, limit the hit list with "yes" using the "online" filter.

Under Learning & Working you will find information on off-campus access for HCU students or employees.

I am affiliated with the HCU and urgently need an article. What can I do?

Please send us your request including the call number and the required article or chapter by email. We will send a link to the HCU fileserver to your email account. If we cannot deliver the requested title, we will inform you by email.

The book or journal is not available at the HCU? Please check the holdings of the other Hamburg libraries or use the interlibrary loan system.

Where can I return books?

You can either use the return box in the West Foyer of the university or you can use the self-checkout to make a return booking during the library's opening hours.
If you have not received a return request, you do not have to come to the HCU: You can currently extend the loan periods up to six times as long as there is no reservation. Only then is a return required.

Can I currently reserve books?

Yes. Please note that it can currently take longer until borrowed media that you have reserved can be made available.

My library membership has expired. Can it be extended during the closing time?

HCU members can send us the scanned documents via email.

Can I order material via interlibrary loan?

Yes. Please note, however, that not all libraries deliver or that deliveries can sometimes take longer.

Searches and requests are made as usual in the union catalogue GVK or via the filter "supra-regional catalogue" within the HCU literature search engine.

You do not have an interlibrary loan account yet?
Please contact the library via email so that your library ID can be activated for interlibrary loan.

Can I work in other libraries and borrow books?

Currently most libraries offer limited possibilities for borrowing. Please consult the websites of the relevant libraries, for example the Hamburg State and University Library or the University Library of the TUHH.
Both libraries also offer a "virtual walk-in" service - the possibility to order single ebooks or e-articles.

SUB:
If you already have a library card of the SUB, remote access is temporarily activated. If you do not yet have a library card, please register using the online form. Further current information can be found in the FAQ of the SUB.

tub.:
For the use of the "Virtual Walk-In" service it is necessary that you are already a registered library user of tub. The order is submitted via an online form in the FAQ of the tub.

Hint:
Use the filter "Hamburg Libraries" in our search engine to search all library holdings at the same time with one query.

Are acquisition proposals processed?

Yes. Where campus licenses are available, we currently give preference to licensing ebooks in order to make literature available to everyone at any time and from any place.

How can I still use the consultation hours for Open Science, literature research and citavi?

Please understand that we currently only answer your questions by email or phone. We can also arrange a date for a zoom meeting.

My question is not answered here. How do I reach the library team?

The best way to contact us is by email via our function addresses. In this way we ensure that your questions can be answered even when someone is absent. You can also contact us by phone:
