FAQ about the current use of the library

These FAQs address to students and HCU staff. You can find the regulations for external users here.

Last update: October 1, 2021

When is the library open and are there any restrictions?

The library is currently open Monday through Thursday, 10 am to 6 pm, and Friday, 10 am to 5 pm for HCU members.

We are offering all regular services, but ask that you use the self-checkout for borrowing and returning items. The book drop box will continue to be available in the foyer for returns, so you do not have to come into the library if you just want to return items.

Please be aware of the access regulations of the HCU and the protection and hygiene measures that apply in the library.

What do I need to consider when visiting the library?

You can enter the building on presentation of the HCU card only with 3G proof, i.e.

> A negative coronavirus test proof (PCR test valid for max. 48 hours, test from an approved test centre valid for max. 24 hours) or
> a coronavirus vaccination certificate (accepted are vaccines approved in the EU, if the vaccination was done with another vaccinea negative coronavirus test must be proven; CoronaWarnApp or CoVPass) or
> a valid proof of recovery.

Verification is done via a security service at the entrances.

Wearing a medical mask (OP mask or FFP2) is mandatory during the entire stay in the library, this also applies to the use of workstations.
In order to maintain distances, the number of people who can visit the library at the same time is limited to a maximum of 50 people. Admission is controlled by taking a visitor's card. Please return this card when leaving the library.

For contact tracking, a QR code of the Luca app or a contact data form can be filled out in the entrance area of the library.

Can I use the workstations in the library?

Our workstations can be used from 04.10.2021 without prior booking or registration. In addition, we were able to increase the offer. In addition to the expansion of seats in the gallery, new and additional workstations will be created on the window front on the ground floor and on the 1st floor during the winter semester. A journal lounge is currently being set up in an additional area on the ground floor. This can also be used for individual workstations until the final design is completed with the appropriate furniture.

The obligation to wear a medical mask (OP mask or FFP2) also applies at the workplaces.

Which online media will I be able to access?

You can access the freely accessible information (Open Access) and  the licensed e-media (e-books, e-journals, databases).

In order to provide the best possible support for teaching and learning in the digital term we are currently increasing our emedia holdings (collections).

Hint:
If you only want to search for emedia in the literature search engine, limit the hit list with "yes" using the "online" filter.

Under Learning & Working you will find information on off-campus access for HCU students or employees.

Where can I return books?

You can either use the return box in the West Foyer of the university or you can use the self-checkout to make a return booking during the library's opening hours.

Can I borrow from other libraries?

As far as the pandemic situation allows, almost all libraries are trying to return to regular services. Please check the websites of the individual libraries, for example the Hamburg State and University Library or the University Library of the TUHH.

Hint:
Use the filter "Hamburg Libraries" in our search engine to search all library holdings at the same time with one query.
