Borrow, Renew, Return

You need a library card in order to borrow books.

For how long may I keep the borrowed books?

The loan period is four weeks. You will learn the return date when you borrow the book. You may as well have a look into your library account to get to know the return date.
Additionally you are reminded by e-mail four days before the loan period will run out.

The loan period is about to run out. However, I need more time in order to finish the book.

You may extend your loan period online via your library account.

How often may I prolong the loan period of the borrowed books?

If there is no reservation placed on the item and the loan period is not yet exceeded you may renew the items up to three times thirty days each. Once the renewal limit has been reached, you must return the item to the library to have it cleared from your library account. For continued use, you may re-check out the item.

The book I am looking for has been lent to somebody else.

Any books already borrowed by some other user may be reserved in our online catalogue. Please use the button labelled “Reserve” in order to do so. By accessing your library account you may manage your placed reservations. Our library informs you by e-mail immediately as soon as the reserved item returns at the reference desk. From that moment on there is a 7-day period for you to pick it up.

What happens if I do not manage to bring any borrowed books back in good time?

When exceeding the loan period overdue fees apply. They amount to EUR 1,- per item AND per beginning week. The amount of these fees is set by the "Gebührensatzng".

If you have received a reminder, please bring the book back immediately in order to avoid a lock up of your library account.

What does “Präsenzexemplar” mean?

A small amount of the library stock is labelled as “Präsenzexemplar”.  It is literature that needs to be available to all readers at all times during opening hours. A part of the “Präsenzexemplare” may be borrowed overnight or over the weekend as a short-term loan. The loan may be carried out earliest half an hour before closing time of the library. The borrowed items have to be returned not later than half an hour after opening the library the next opening day.
Excluded from short-term loan are current issues of journals, loose-leaf collections, worth protecting stocks, course reserve collections ("Semesterapparate"), reference books and dictionaries.
