With approximately 80,000 printed books and journals and a constantly growing range of electronic journals and ebooks, the main task of our library is supplying the HafenCity University with literature and information. The library supports HCU researchers with its services to support the publication process. It is also open to all citizens of the Hamburg region.

The library took over the holdings of the faculties of architecture, civil engineering, geomatics and urban planning of the respective predecessor institutions. The collection was expanded, and enhanced to new subjects such as digital city, sustainability and socio-cultural aspects of urban and metropolitan development.

The library is a "hybrid" library with a range of both print media and electronic media. All books are freely accessible and most of them may be borrowed. All stocks can be looked through and found via the online catalogue. The database listing complements the searching. There are also the DIN standards (industrial norms) available. Not locally available literature can be procured via interlibrary loan.

By using the publication server repOS the library promotes electronic publishing of publications and research data at the university and provides a central access point of electronic university publications of the HCU. The HCU Library supports the efforts of its researchers to make their research outputs Open Access with services and individual consultation, and the HCU supports the Open Access transformation from subscription agreements for scientific journals to licence agreements, which include a component to support Open Access publishing.
