Overview

The integrative research areas characterise, in the form of research groups, the profile of the HCU. The university has focused its research profile and research standards on the fields in which solutions are anticipated for pressing problems. For this reason, required and possible new research topics are developed in an open dialogue both inside and outside the university.

The search for these topics is based on the following criteria:

  • Development of approaches for pressing questions in the Hamburg society, city and region
  • Innovativeness of topics in order to ensure success in the case of publications and third-party fund raising
  • International outlook in order to support the international orientation of the HCU
  • Orientation towards the mission statement of sustainability in order to be able to fulfil the social responsibility of a university for architecture and urban development.
  • Existing competence of several HCU Hamburg professors in order to ensure that the topic can be processed in an expert manner in the coming 2-3 years.

Five interdisciplinary research groups were already formed in the run-up to the university foundation with the involvement of the professors of the HafenCity University Hamburg. The first step was thus completed for supporting interdisciplinary co-operation, which has been and was increased and expanded according to the interests of those involved. Since then, two additional research groups have been formed.

The seven current areas are:

Architecture - construction as an interplay of design, society, technology and the economy

What do the solutions of the future look like, how are the constantly changing demands with regard to design, society, technology and the economy factored in?

Digital City

How can the city be intelligently linked? How can the acquiring of knowledge contribute to a sustainable design for the built environment?

Real Estate and the City

Which innovative methods, technologies and processes can improve planning, construction and operations?

City Metamorphoses

How should the cultural legacy be dealt with in a constantly changing urban society and economy?

Metropolitan Regions in Flux

How should large cities and their environs react to changes – globalisation, technological changes, demography etc.?

REAP - Resource Efficiency in Architecture and Planning

Which innovations can contribute to greater sustainability with regard to planning and construction? Additional information on resource efficiency in architecture and planning

Cities Built near Water

Which trendsetting concepts are there for cities which want to benefit from their location near water?
