Metropolises represent the way of life of the future. They are places of innovation, tradition and diverse ways of living. Their culture revolves around discussions, practical experience, migration, history, sport, art, subculture, big events and much more. This is a milieu where avant-garde and popular mainstream develop, life is a mixture of day-to day occurrences and states of emergency.

Metropolises have a key role in the world in their function as cultural, living and economic areas. In this connection, they are diverse and attractive, but at the same time complex and their development can often not be foreseen. The degree programme focuses on this broad context, by approaching the metropolis as a location of cultural innovation. It is understood as an interface between technical and cultural studies' disciplines on the one hand and artistic practices on the other. Organised on an interdisciplinary level, it carries out creative and practically oriented reflection in different teaching formats.

The degree course offers an innovative combination of theory, practice and project work, which are carried out in close co-operation with cultural institutions both in Germany and abroad. Theoretical lecture and discussion modules run in parallel – with co-ordinated content – to the project-oriented teaching modules. The public sphere thus becomes a place of reflection, intervention and experimentation: The course content includes both theoretical text work as well as the design and implementation of playful city activities, exhibitions, city walks etc.

At the heart of this speciality lies the Bachelor in Metropolitan Culture. In addition, subject-specific and open courses for other HCU Bachelor and Master School courses are also offered.
