No tuition fee exemption due to a disability
Students who suffer from a disability which hinders their ability to study or a chronic illness can only apply for a tuition fee exemption if they have already exceeded the standard period of study plus two semesters. An interim arrangement applies for the 2008/09 winter semester …more information
With effect from the 2009 summer semester, the following applies for students who have a disability which hinders their ability to study or a chronic illness: To be exempted from the obligation to pay tuition fees, you must make an appropriate application for this before the start of the semester (March 31 for the summer semester, and September 30 for the winter semester).
A severe disability is assumed by the legislator where a degree of disability of 50% exists. Please submit a certified copy of the disabled person's pass as proof. A student who has a degree of disability under 50% can also receive exemption from the obligation to pay tuition fees if a specialist medical certificate shows that this disability significantly hinders the student's ability to study. A precise reason is required for this – the statement alone that the disability significantly hinders the student's ability to study is not enough.
On the website of the Federal Ministry for Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS) (www.bmas.de), you can download a pdf document which will provide you with additional information on this subject.
Students who suffer from a chronic illness which significantly hinders their ability to study can also apply for exemption from the obligation to pay tuition fees. On the website of the Federal Ministry for Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS) (www.bmas.de), you can download "Anhaltspunkte für ärztliche Gutachten" (Indications for medical certificates) as a pdf document, from which you can see which chronic illness equates to which degree of disability. A specialist medical certificate, which explains the respective chronic illness and to what extent and degree this hinders the student's ability to study, must, however, also be submitted here. Only a severe disability will result in a successful application for exemption from the obligation to pay tuition fees.
You can still submit an application if the reason for applying arises during the ongoing semester.
